Modernising Malta is a personal project that I have worked on in the past. It’s aimed towards preserving Maltese culture from being forgotten by today’s generation.

THE CHALLENGE

I grew up in a time where our traditional aspects barely existed any more since they were replaced by more modern equipment. Due to our modernising mentality, we are robbing the young generation the opportunity of enjoying and learning about their roots first hand. We need to mix modern technology and design with our culture in order for children to grow excited about the prospect of learning about traditions and cultural places in Malta, now that they can’t observe women wearing an ‘ghonella’, or ride a traditional ‘xarabank’.

These set of illustrations showcase Malta’s culture, inspired by modern flat design. We can take modern design and pair it with culture in order to appeal to new people; children and tourists.

LOGO EVOLUTION

After extensive research about the region, one aspect clearly stood out and become the inspiration for the Emilia icon; “Fiore della Vita”. The icon, inspired by “Fiore della Vita” or the “Flower of Life” holds various theories on the meaning of this geometrical shape of perfect form, proportion and harmony, including historically representing rebirth, regeneration, joy and hope. The “Flower of Life” used to be placed on tiles made of clay and called tigelle (derived from the Latin word for cover). A dough was then baked between the tiles to produce this typical Modenese bread called tigella. As a result the flower was stamped on the bread. Now, this flower has become the stamp of Emilia. The flower as well as the typography of the logo emit a feminine feeling in line with the brand identity.
